Brace yourselves for an exhilarating ride as Adventureland is set to unveil the reimagined Underground roller coaster in 2024, promising an immersive experience like never before. This ambitious reimagination has been brought to life through the creative ingenuity of local company Gaff Box.
"We're thrilled to be a part of Adventureland's journey in reimagining Underground. Our team has poured their hearts and souls into this project, aiming to create an experience that transports riders to a whole new dimension of thrills and adventure," said Ian Miller, the owner and creative force behind Gaff Box. “We grew up coming to Adventureland and riding Underground. This is a part of our childhood, and getting to be a part of its rebirth is a true honor.”
Gaff Box isn't new to pushing boundaries in immersive experiences. Known for their work on Des Moines' acclaimed Slaughterhouse haunted attraction and their contributions to Adventureland's Phantom Fall Fest event over the years, they've carved out a reputation for delivering spine-tingling experiences that linger long after the adrenaline fades.
"Our collaboration with Adventureland has been nothing short of exhilarating," says Miller. "For the past two years, we've had the privilege of helping bring Phantom Fall Fest to life, and now, with 'Underground,' we're taking that level of immersion to unprecedented heights."
From the moment park guests walk up to the ride, there will be a noticeable difference. Park officials say guests will enter through a portal designed to look like a mine and find wanted posters and comical videos introducing the guests to Bad Bob and Sheriff Sam. When they enter the ride’s station, the room has been transformed to include more details and theming, along with an updated greeter animatronic that will tell the story of Underground.
"The level of detail and immersive storytelling in the reimagined 'Underground' is truly remarkable,” Adventureland General Manager Mike Lusky said. “Gaff Box's dedication to authenticity and their ability to bring our vision to life has exceeded all expectations."
Throughout the rest of the ride, more details have been added, including updating the animatronics, adding more rockwork on the walls, improved lighting, audio, new effects, and some new scenes that designers believe will “wow” the guests.
The reimagination of Underground goes beyond a mere refurbishment. It delves into the depths of local history and culture, incorporating authentic elements from Altoona's coal mining past.
Extensive research was conducted to ensure that every detail, from the theming to the storytelling, resonates with the spirit of the community.
"We wanted to honor Altoona's rich heritage while delivering a thrilling experience," explains Miller. "Every aspect of the attraction, from the meticulously crafted scenery to the storyline featuring iconic characters like Bad Bob and Sheriff Sam, is a testament to our commitment to authenticity and immersion."
The result? An experience that leaves riders immersed in a world steeped in history and intrigue. With attention to detail unparalleled in the park's history, Underground stands as a beacon of Adventureland's dedication to pushing boundaries and delivering unforgettable moments.
As Adventureland celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2024, the unveiling of the reimagined Underground marks a milestone in the park's journey. So, buckle up, hold on tight, and get ready to embark on the ride of a lifetime at Adventureland's newly reimagined Underground.
